This is the type of book I enjoy, layered and textured with vivid descriptions and insinuations and philosophy. It is not an easy read even though it is entertaining.A college professor of languages feels compelled to bid on a <i>keris</i> (an Indonesian ceremonial dagger) at an auction and buys it. A keris has magical powers and this one is insistent on seeking out Maeve.
When she tries to better understand the emotions it evokes, the man who bid against her at the auction seems to be the key. He is an empu, a keris maker. She ends up trailing him to Italy to find out what the keris is trying to tell her. But she finds his dangerous half-brother instead.
All the while Maeve's story is being related, the background about her and her twin sister Moira slowly unfolds and is intertwined with Maeve's present-day journey. This is told from Moira's POV and is a little jarring since Maeve's story is in first person. But it works.
Eluding the half-brother who desires the keris to use in black magic, Maeve has a hard time finding the empu and asks her almost-lover for help. Noel shows up and serves to counterbalance Maeve's passionate insistence on tracing the empu.
As she begins to come to grips with the past, she is given the knowledge to face the present. I was a little surprised at one point in the twins' story but afterward, felt that development should have been expected.
For people who like mystery mixed with supernatural and a touch of romance, this is a good read.

I found this book a little slow in the beginning, kept wondering if I really wanted to read it. I am soooo glad I hung in there as it was great. A really good story, bordering on fantasy, which is not my genre, but by that time I was hooked. Well worth pushing through if you like books with 'feeling'. The sort of story where I would like a sequel, what about it Therese? I would love to read about Maeve's relationship with Noel growing and what happens next.....
I actually read this a while back and then came across it again spooling through my list of books. So I decided to read it again. This is a great book. It's suspenseful and mysterious and so worth the time to read it. You can't help rooting for Maeve, falling a little in love with Noel and feeling like your actually in Rome. Do yourself a favor and read this.
This is the second novel I have read by this author and I honestly can say I hope she keeps them coming. There was not one single moment in this, nor the previous novel where I was bored or had to put the book down and walk away for awhile. Quite the opposite in fact. The plot line involving identical twin sisters was well developed and kept the reader guessing especially (possible spoiler here) one pretends to be the other, which, is a very believable plot line. But there is much more than that involved in this novel. I have passed this book to my relatives who have also enjoyed it. I also recommend her second novel "The Moon Sisters" You will not be disappointed.
The book is complicated but holds your interest throughout. Told in the first person by Maeve and is in present times. The part that is told in the second person is by Maeve's twin Moira and from the period 1995 to 2000. When one realizes that Maeve lost her twin at an early age, one also then understands the family complications, and the very tense situation that exists between the mother, the father and Maeve.
Maeve comes across as being a much older woman. I initially thought she was in her late 30s because she behaves likes one! Her relationship with Noel was a fragile one and she was more than anything else frightened to confront her feelings for him and act on it. Noel was an integral part of the story and comes into play when Maeve discovers a childhood relic and pursues a seemingly random chase across Europe following anonymous notes on the mysterious abilities of a keris knife.
Moira and Maeve were twins with their own language, a sense of what each was doing, their feelings were something that they could steadily block so that the other twin could not read her. Their childhood was idyllic till they both fell in love with the same boy and then the blocking became worse as one closed the other off, which led to a deterioration in their very life.
The stories of Moira and Maeve were one part of the story and the discovery of the keris and the pursuit of the keris and in the midst of it all, the maturing of the relationship between Noel and Maeve was the other.
Put together the stories of sisterly love, mystery/paranormal, magic, Eastern mystery and all overlaid with romantic love made for a very good story though one tended to get side tracked at various times as one story overtook the other in importance.
Maeve Leahy is a work-a-holic. She is a professor of languages at the local university. She works so hard that she leaves no time for fun. She doesn’t even visit her parents at their family home. It’s been years! This all starts to change when Maeve is at an auction and spots a keris, a dagger, and the memories come rushing back. She remembers being out on the lake out her identical twin, playing make-believe, and she is holding her grandfather’s dagger high in the sky, announcing that she was a victorious pirate princess. She remembers dropping it. The dagger had disappeared in the deep water that day, but the memory lingered, causing Maeve to want the keris, in order to hang onto this memory of her twin, Moira. Once Maeve bids on the keris and wins it, things start to change. The keris seems magical. Is she losing her mind?
This is a wonderful story, filled with magic and folklore, love and family, memories and dreams of the future. The characters are well-defined and strong, and the settings are beautiful and realistic. The reader discovers Maeve’s secret past little-by-little, making the reader want to read and read in order to learn the mysteries of her past. This is a well-written and very enjoyable book!
