Andrew Abbott was the last man standing; all of his friends had succumbed to leg shackles. Now that he had sold out from the army, he was unsure how he wanted to spend the rest of his life. His father proposed sending him back to restore their burned plantation in America, but just as he was set to leave, he met the woman of his dreams.

Gwendolyn Lambert's family was reduced to penury after her father was disgraced and killed in a duel. Gwen and her invalid mother survive on a mere pittance in the city of Bath. Her mother's cousin, the Dowager Duchess of Loring, is determined to see Gwendolyn taken care of and restored to her rightful place, but she does not have any use for society after her family was treated ill by them.

But the savvy dowager has a few tricks up her sleeve, including her handsome and charming grandson. Unfortunately, she did not count on him being sent to America or Gwendolyn's father's family coming back into the picture. The entire Loring-Abbott clan becomes involved in a scheme to bring Andrew and Gwendolyn together, but will they be able to overcome being separated by oceans, storms, and the interference of scheming mamas?

Shadows of Doubt Traditional Regency Romance LoringAbbott Book 4 edition by Elizabeth Johns Literature Fiction eBooks

This author knows how to create longing between two people who are in love without crossing over into lust. It’s not easy to do so I appreciate that! Gwen was an interesting character and Andrew was loveable.

I was really enjoying the book until the last third. I have no patience for the no imagination plot which is driven by a misunderstanding or miscommunication. That ruined it for me. I would have much preferred time spent reading about how Gwen and Andrew grew to deeply love one another. They each had very interesting stories to tell. Why weren’t they told to each other??? *** Spoiler alert*** thankfully the equally boring and predictable return of the evil villain was not used or that would have really irritated me.

Back to warm fuzzies, it was nice to see the characters from the prior books incorporated into this story and to read a romance that was clean AND passionate.
I’m going to keep reading this author’s book I just hope they are more intellectually challenging.

Shadows of Doubt Traditional Regency Romance LoringAbbott Book 4 edition by Elizabeth Johns Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Of all of the Elizabeth John's novels I have read... and I'm pretty sure I have read all she has written so far.... this has been my favorite! Adventure, flirtation, humor, wit, and obstacles to overcome. But this one is not full of (((spoiler alert))) horrible personal tragedies and the anguish of those who perpetrated those tragedies against an innocent. Those subjects are very difficult for me to read and pull the joy out of a good story for me. In this novel, I enjoyed reading about society in England as well as in America. I love the inclusion of art and painting and as well as descriptions of being at sea. An amazing story and an amazing romance! Thoroughly enjoyable and yet not predictable. Hats off to the author!
“Shadows of Doubt” is the fourth and final book in the Loring- Abbott series by Elizabeth Johns. Gwendolyn Lambert and her family are new characters in this series, which added some good and bad characters to the story. Andrew Abbott finds his match in Gwendolyn but she has an ill mother to care for and Andrew has family obligations in America. The story is well written, a clean romance with surprises and humor that are consistent in this series that I so appreciated. This is the last book in this series, but some of the previous characters will be appearing in the next series by this talented author, “A Series of Elements”. I have enjoyed this series and am so glad for the Elements series that continued the story and to develop many of the original characters.
Another great story from this author! Book 4 of this series is charming and sweet with a nice touch of excitement and suspense along the way. I really enjoy how the characters from all four books of this series appear in each book. It gives the reader a sense of engagement and a closer connection to the family and to their plights, and it increases the enjoyment in reading the entire series.

This book has a very good mix of romance and humor, with a nice bit of excitement mixed in, that made it a very interesting and entertaining read. This book was also hard for me to put down. The action is steady and not boring in the least. There was always something going on to keep the reader engaged. It is a great read - a clean but passionate romance. Another well-written story from Elizabeth Johns! Highly recommended.
BOOK 4# Shadows of Doubt,{Andrew's Story}. This is is, I think, the end of the Loring Abbott Series... Boo-hoo! But I believe Elizabeth Johns is going to be writing a series about...(building the suspense)...THE ASHBURY TRIPLETS! It's called "The Ashbury Triplets Trilogy"(just thought you might want to know!) and the 1st book is going about Gavin {DR. CRAIG}!!! I don't know about you but every time I see that poor Scot I think,"That dude has got to find love!" And Margaux is the heroine! Anyway, I don't know when it is coming out( ( I'm sorry). So moving on to the book Andrew, as always, was outstanding! But I wasn't crazy about Gwen...she was supposed to be a redhead, but she was ~incredibly~ boring, (I mean, c'mon, really?) And to me they "fell in love" a bit quick. But that might just be me. I think Andrew deserved ALOT better. On the other hand, I absolutely LOVED seeing a lot of the characters! Especially the FAIRMONTS! But unlike the other books in the series, this one dragged in a few parts, but the best part in the entire book was when they get "STRANDED"! Classic,(it made me bump up my rating)! But "SEEKING REDEMPTION" is still the best book in the series, though! This is a clean read. I guess you could read this as a stand-alone, but I TOTALLY recommend reading all the other books in the series,(especially BOOK 3)!!! If you don't you may get confused with all the characters. So just read them & you'll be like me and say,"Nice seeing all of y'all again!!!" See? 'Hope my review helped you!
Andrew Abbott finally finds a woman he can love for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, she comes from a family that has been disgraced in the eyes of the bon ton and feels she is not good enough for him. She considers herself a spinster who will have to make her own way in life and won't take charity from him or his family. How can he convince her that he loves her and wants her to be his wife? Maybe saving her life during a hurricane on his father's plantation in Virginia will do it? Can't hurt, right?

I loved this story. The only problem I found with the book was the editing. Often there were sentences with too many conflicting pronouns and lots of double negatives. It was pretty easy from the context to determine what the author was saying, but sometimes it took reading a sentence a couple times to figure it out.
